Meet the Mentors Supper 25th October 2018

Date: 25 October 2018

Venue: Oriental Club, Stratford House, Stratford Place, London, W1C 1ES

Time: 7:00pm Conversation starts, 8:00pm Supper

Cost: £40 (Hong Kong Society members), £50 (non-members). Price includes 2 course meal with wine.

 

A dinner for a maximum of 34 guests with four experienced mentors, all involved in the banking, legal and financial services industries, is being planned for the evening of Thursday 25th October. This is the sixth in a series of the ‘Meet the Mentor’ Suppers.

The mentors all from a variety of business backgrounds will relate their experiences to those attending and share their views and perceptions. This supper is suitable for all those thinking of embarking on, or furthering, careers in these industries; it will be an informal and useful exchange of information and discussion.

The dinner will be in a Private Room in the Oriental Club.

In the chair:

Mark Patterson retired from Standard Chartered Bank in 2013, having worked for them in Hong Kong and London since 2004. He also worked in Hong Kong for 12 years as the CEO of Deutsche Morgan Grenfel. He is currently a Consultant in Financial Services and was previously a Committee Member of the Hong Kong Society.

Sally Patterson is a Senior Coach and UK Deputy Head of Programme Management of Mandarin Consulting. She began her journalistic career at the BBC in London after graduating from London University. She went on to work in radio and television as a journalist, broadcaster, political commentator and writer in Hong Kong, where she lived for fifteen years. She has experience in publishing, public relations and marketing. She is also a qualified TEFL teacher.

 

The Mentors:

Benjamin Crystal – Managing Director, Head of Fintech, UBS

Benjamin is a Managing Director in UBS Investment Bank’s Corporate Client Solutions business. Ben is Head of Fintech for EMEA, advising clients on equity and debt fundraising as well as M&A. Ben has been with UBS for 16 years. Prior to joining UBS Ben read Jurisprudence at Oxford University.

Angela Li – Director, Transaction Tax, Greater China Business Services for UK & Ireland, Ernst & Young LLP

Richard Pike – Partner, Thrings

Richard joined Thrings in 2015, having spent eight years in London where he worked in private practice with Addleshaw Goddard and Shepherd and Wedderburn. He also worked in-house at the London Development Agency, with Clark Holt in Swindon, and at one of Kenya’s largest commercial law firms.

James Proudlock – Chief Executive Officer, Direct Nickel Pty Ltd

James grew up in Singapore, and studied Chinese at SOAS Studies and Beijing Foreign Languages University. After graduating he joined Swire Pacific’s China Office in Hong Kong. He then spent 8 years as a sugar trader with ED&F Man Group based in Singapore and Auckland, where he was Managing Director of Man New Zealand Ltd and Chief Executive of Mackay Refined Sugars (NZ) Ltd. He left Man to start his own company sugaronline.com. He has subsequently held senior management positions at UBS and JPMorgan, and most recently was Deputy CEO of the London Metal Exchange. He is now the CEO of Direct Nickel Projects Ltd, an Australian-based company focused on the extraction of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ores.
