“With your family’s help, you have taken huge steps, moving from home, studying abroad with a different language and culture and finding work – even as an intern. Very few students anywhere in the world do this. So congratulate yourself and be prepared to make the most of the opportunities that will come to you whether at home or abroad. You are China’s future leaders and you have a global outlook!”
— Brian Renwick

“Remember that, beyond the skills and competencies that recruiting companies describe, they are also looking for "nice" people. This may sound empty and old-fashioned, but a little kindness goes a long way. This is not about artificial politeness, nor anything that you can "fake". Just work on your abilities to be generous, thoughtful and kind. I guarantee this will increase your chances of being offered a great job! Happy Christmas!”
— Claire Lyell

“Make sure that all the elements of your presentation are professional. In particular your email address should be related to your name and not some descriptive adjective, so no [email protected] . This also applies to Skype, please ensure that any picture you use is a clear and professional image, no silly faces, no messy backgrounds and no cartoons. Be careful that your Skype name is a professional sounding one and check that any messages you send via Skype come out in English and not Chinese characters, as English people cannot read them and will not know what you are saying, this is particularly true of any invitations sent for becoming a contact.
These may only be small points but are very important as they are the first impression the potential employer will get and you want to make a favourable one.”
— Eric Waley

“I would like to wish everyone not to be afraid of challenges. Remember challenges make your life interesting and overcoming them is what makes your life meaningful. So push yourself and don’t be afraid to fail. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It is OK to fail and you can learn a lot from your each failure. If you are not failing, you are not growing. So don’t worry about failing, worry about the chances you might miss if you don’t even try. And the most importantly believe in yourself! ”
— Evelina Vilkaite

“Preparation and research are all useful for interviews but remember that you will be talking to a real person. Try to talk to them and not just at them, answer their questions rather than reciting your answers. Show them that you are a real person too! The best place to do this is usually the first question they ask – ‘Tell me about yourself.’ If you’re just answering about your education and work experience you are missing a huge opportunity! So who are you, really?”
— Greg Gaynor

“Greetings to you all from one of Mandarin’s newest coaches. It has been a wonderful experience and I enjoy every minute of our contact on Skype contact! Congratulations to all those who have got beyond the digital and telephone interviews and have reached the dizzy heights of the final interview. Your efforts and dedication have been fantastic and will be well rewarded! For those of us on the coaching side, keep preparing yourselves thoroughly for the interviews and let us have as many useful links and as much information as possible before we meet online. 2015 is going to be a fantastic year, I know, so I wish you all the luck and success possible.”
